The Perfect Gift

It’s common at Christmas time for people to ask us what gift we are hoping for. You might answer, “A sweater, or a new phone.” Whatever your answer is, it is probably something that can be purchased in a store. What if you looked deeper, and answered from your heart? What burden are you carrying? What would the Christmas list look like, if everyone was honest about what they really want and need? Instead of clothes, jewelry and electronics, I think we would see requests for help with things like broken relationships, feelings of abandonment, betrayal, loneliness, and feeling unloved. We might see requests for a miracle in health, a marriage, or a child’s life. Some might feel lost, on the wrong path, or looking for purpose in their life. No matter what the need is, there is one perfect gift, that fulfills every need. This gift has already been given and is waiting to be accepted.

“For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6-7

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever beleiveth in Him, will not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Everything that we could ever need, is found in Jesus. He is the perfect gift, given by God. He has gifts waiting for us. We only need to seek Him to find them. Gifts like forgiveness, faith, strength, transformation, restoration, freedom, rest, and peace.

This year when we think about what gifts to give one another, let’s give more than just the tangible gift. Let’s give what we have been given through Jesus. We can give His love, by giving encouragement and sincere affirmation. We can give our time, by being intentional and asking, “What’s going on in your world?” We can be a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. We can pray with them and for them. We can give the joy of knowing the Lord through a smile to those we encounter, to lift their spirit. Joy is infectious! These things and more, are gifts far more valuable than any item we can purchase in a store, and we can give them all year long.
